Understanding Spot Gold Prices and Currency Benchmarks
Welcome to the Global Market Tracker, an independent financial information system dedicated to tracking international spot commodities and daily central bank foreign exchange reference rates.
1. How Gold and Silver Spot Prices Are Quoted
In international wholesale bullion markets, gold and silver are quoted per troy ounce (oz t) in US Dollars (USD). One troy ounce is equivalent to exactly 31.1034768 grams, which is heavier than the standard avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 grams) used for common groceries.
Spot prices reflect wholesale transactions for delivery of physical bullion bars between bullion dealers and institutional institutions. Retail consumer jewelry quotes invariably include local taxes (such as VAT or GST), fabrication/making charges, and retail markup.
2. Understanding Karat Purity Classifications
Gold purity is classified globally using the Karat (K) scale, where 24 Karat denotes 99.9% pure elementary gold:
- 24K (99.9% Fineness): Pure investment bullion, bars, and official coins.
- 22K (91.6% Fineness): Traditional high-purity jewelry commonly preferred in India and the Middle East.
- 18K (75.0% Fineness): Standard durability grade for European and North American fine jewelry.
- 14K (58.5% Fineness): Highly durable everyday jewelry alloyed with copper, silver, or zinc.
3. Transparent Currency Reference Fixings
Our foreign exchange indicators are derived from daily reference rates published by central monetary institutions, including the European Central Bank (ECB) via the open-source Frankfurter platform. Reference rates provide non-commercial daily benchmarks and are not executable retail trading quotes.
